Two European rail wagons are cut and fitted together at their openings: here is a mute object without entrance or exit, a closed image of impenetrable containment cloaking an interior which will be imagined. The plan view of the work, as sign ( × or +), calculates the abstract metrics of administrative and instrumental rationality. But these symbols also reference cancellation and abstract signature, declarative marks of individual loss.
The work shows an external surround for an inescapable interiority, a collision of material facts sustaining an impossible comprehension, which must become possible. Its static fixity suggests progress at a standstill: this is a vehicle no longer capable of purposeful operation, stilled in its historical moment, a mnemonic to last.
