Forever Yours, Mary-Lou

set design, 1983
October, 1983, SFU Theatre, Centre for the Arts, Burnaby, BC
written by Michel Tremblay, directed by Marc Diamond, with set design by Greg Snider. Cast: Patti Allen, Norman Armour, Melanie Doerr.

My colleague Marc Diamond from the theatre area of SFU’s Centre for the Arts asked if I would be interested in doing a set design for the fall mainstage production of Forever Yours, Marie-Lou. I agreed, never having done a set before, and so began a productive and enjoyable relationship with him that lasted up until his untimely death in 2005.

The set features a Québécois kitchen organized as a Catholic chapel; overhead, a sloping projection screen shows a greyed-out image of the family in happier times. On either side of the kitchen, red carpets run back into the darkness.
