Suspension of Disbelief

wood, steel
34.5” x 20.5” x 5.5”
1973

An axe chops into a piece of wood, and sawing down through the centre of the axe-handle is a handsaw; an earlier technology is split by a later one. The continuous divide between the old and the new.
The first sculptural piece after a conceptual education – a commitment to the idea of object-making, labour, work and the responsibilities of durable material production. An act of faith in the cognitive possibilities of objects to convey critical meaning.
